A very talented enigma

Hosted by some of Joseph Walsh Studio’s master craftspeople, these day long classes will offer an insight into the skills and making methods practiced at the Studio. Suitable for both professional makers and those with a general interest, each day addresses a different skill or area, offering a unique opportunity to learn about the skills behind the realisation of the work in practice.

Participants can book for an individual day, or for the full 4 days at a discounted rate.

Classes start at 10am – please arrive at 9.45am for registration.

Tuesday 23 September

Concept to Realization – a walk through the conceptualization, design and making process with Joseph Walsh, Russell Jacob (Design Technician), Stephen Pallin (Workshop Technician) and Remi Behr (Master Maker)

The speakers will talk through the process of realizing Magnus generic viagra Celestii – a site-specific large scale sculptural instillation currently on exhibiting in the New Art Centre, Roche Court, UK. The talk will cover the following design steps – initial sketch, sketch models, agreeing on form and composition, 3D drawings, presentation model, engineering (collaboration with Arup Engineering), structural testing, material selection, making challenges, logistics and installation.

Wednesday 24 September

Stone Carving – sculptural form and letter carving with sculptors Mario Lopes and Matthew Thompson

This hands-on day long master class will cover the different technics and stages of stone form sculpting and letter carving, suitable for both beginners and those with carving experience.  Mario Lopes and Matthew Thompson will walk through the stages of the making process in two sessions, from stone selection and marking out the design to carving techniques and finishing methods.

As well as sharing with the participants their background training and vast experience, both sculptures will discuss their work with Joseph Walsh Studio over the years including current projects.

Traditional and Modern Upholstery Techniques with Upholsterer Pierre Bourdel

An introduction to traditional upholstery techniques: a look at upholstery through the ages, demonstration of techniques: structural support, comfort and ergonomics, covering materials, fixings and adhesion

Friday 26 September

Miniture Dovetails and Japanese Work Tools with Robert Ingham (Designer, Maker and Educator), Keisuke Kawai (Master Maker, Joseph Walsh Studio) and Kenta Hirai (Assistant Maker, Joseph Walsh Studio)

Demonstrating the making of miniature dovetails which Robert uses for the corner joints of many of his box designs. Robert will emphasise the development of the technique through the history of the craft to the current day and the contribution that observant craftsmen have made to the tools, methods and skills used in the making of this intriguing joint.

The afternoon session will focus on Japanese work tools and planes: Using traditional tools such as plans and spokeshaves in modern making, including practical demonstration.

A day of expert talks and tours delivered by the studio personnel. In the gallery, Joseph Walsh Studio will share the design, concept and development process of realizing a piece through sketches and models.

The studio is open to public 10-5pm daily throughout the festival.
